Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Newsletter

If you have subscribed to our newsletter, you will receive emails from us. We will only send you emails which you have signed up to receive, or which pertain to the services we provided to you.

To send you emails, we use the name and email address you provide us. Our site also logs the IP address you used when you signed up for the service to prevent abuse of the system.

When you subscribe, your email and relevant information will be shared with the MailPoet Sending Service which we use to send our emails. See their privacy policy here. This service allows us to track opens and clicks on our emails. We use this information to analyze what kind of content is appreciated in our newsletters.

Analytics

We use Burst Statistics to collect basic, anonymized analytics data about our website traffic, such as pageviews and referrers. All analytics data is processed and stored locally on our own server and is never shared with or sent to any third parties. Burst Statistics does not use tracking cookies or collect personally identifiable information.

We also use Google Search Console and PageSpeed Insights to monitor our site’s search visibility and performance. These tools are only used to optimize our website’s discoverability and do not collect or store personal information about our visitors and do not use cookies.

Spam protection

We use the Antispam Bee plugin to filter out unwanted comments. This plugin does not use tracking cookies and does not transmit personal data to third parties. All processing takes place locally on our server.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. This is so you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

Caching

This site utilizes caching in order to facilitate a faster response time and better user experience. Caching potentially stores a duplicate copy of every web page that is on display on this site. All cache files are temporary, and are never accessed by any third party, except as necessary to obtain technical support from the cache plugin vendor. Cache files expire on a schedule set by the site administrator, but may easily be purged by the administrator before their natural expiration, if necessary. We may use QUIC.cloud services to process & cache your data temporarily. See their privacy policy here.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue. When you sign up for the newsletter, we will save your email indefinitely, or for 12 months of you not opening our emails.

What rights you have over your data

If you have left comments or signed up for the newsletter, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
